Willoughby Symphony’s Enigma will see its inimitable Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Dr Nicholas Milton AM lead the orchestra for a performance of one of the most glorious English works of the symphonic repertoire, Elgar’s Enigma Variations.
A set of orchestral variations on an original theme, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, op 36 is dedicated to his ‘friends within’, each variation being a musical sketch of one of his close circle of friends. The work is most famously identified by its moving Nimrod variation, which as a stand-alone movement is universally recognised and beloved. Hearing Nimrod as the centrepiece of a complete performance of the variations is always an enthralling experience.
The concert also features a performance by the astounding Australian trumpet superstar Rainer Saville. The program opens with Gershwin’s intoxicating An American in Paris.
